Shalom is one of my favorite words.
What is Shalom?
The simple meaning of shalom is “peace.”
But shalom is so much more than a mere absence of violence or hostility. It’s about much more than a couple of friends or a couple of nations getting along with each other.
Shalom has to with wholeness. It’s about fullness of life. It’s about things being as they were meant to be.
Shalom refers to a comprehensive state of well-being that touches every aspect of life.
This is what God intended for the world. God created the world to be a world of shalom. And when sin entered the world, shalom was broken.
Restoring Shalom
Ever since sin became a reality in our world, God has been at work to restore shalom.
Why?
Because God loves the world. Because God longs for all of creation to experience the fullness and wholeness for which it was created.
And that’s why Jesus came into the world. Jesus came to restore shalom, first and foremost between us and God, but also to restore shalom in every other realm of life. He came “to reconcile to himself all things” (Col. 1:20).
Leaders of Shalom
The church’s calling is to participate with God in restoring shalom in the world. Unfortunately, that mission has so often been overshadowed by our anxiety over declining attendance, declining budgets, and declining buildings.
The church’s mission of shalom has largely been forgotten.
And that’s why the church needs you and me. The church needs leaders who will lead God’s people to participate in God’s mission of shalom.
In other words, the church needs leaders of shalom. Leaders who not only clearly recognize the challenge the church is facing today, but also who are clear about God’s mission. Leaders who not only know how to lead in challenging times, but who also are focused on experiencing the shalom of God in their own lives.
The church needs leaders who lead from a place of wholeness, not from anxiety and fear.
The church needs leaders of shalom because the world needs leaders of shalom.
But how do we become leaders of shalom?
