Welcome to StretchyChurch!
Ok. Here we go.
You’re gonna laugh, but this is my third StretchyChurch blog! My first blog was a Blogspot blog. My second one was on Wordpress, but I let it die when I started my position at Northminster Presbyterian Church (where I still serve as pastor). I just had too much going on to maintain a blog.
But now I’m back! Woohoo!!
Let me give you a few reasons why I chose the name StretchyChurch.
1. The world is rapidly changing. This is obvious, so I won’t go into great detail about the kinds of changes. But we can see it every day—technologically, geopolitically, culturally, and so forth.
2. The church needs to adapt to a rapidly changing world. One of the ideas I plan to discuss is the difference between technical and adaptive change. A lot of times, churches will look at the changing world and think, “Hey, we need to be more contemporary (or build a new building, or get a new sign)!” But this is only technical change and doesn’t address the real challenge. Churches need to identify the true adaptive challenges they face and wrestle with how God is calling them to respond to those new challenges.
3. Churches and their leaders need to be constantly learning. We can’t get stuck in old ways of doing things simply because that’s what’s always worked in the past. Leaders themselves need to adapt with true adaptive change, rather than simple technical change (i.e., create a flat organization, incorporate more video in the sermon, talk more about pop culture, etc.)
What can you expect?
No doubt this will all evolve over time, but here are some of the things I hope to cover in this blog:
Leadership practices for church and ministry leaders.
What does it really mean to be “missional”? (Yeah. I'm gonna go there.)
New, creative, fun, etc. ideas for churches.
Theology of what it means to be the church.
Ideas for sermons and sermon series.
A personal story or reflection every now and then.
So now what?
If you are involved in church or ministry leadership, or if you are simply passionate about what God is up to, then this blog is for you.
As I get this blog started, I plan to post about once or twice a week. If you want to keep up with new posts, you can subscribe to my RSS feed. You can also follow me on Twitter, where I'll not only announce new posts, but also share other fun and helpful stuff.
You know what would be great?
I’d love it if you’d share some ideas of topics that you’d like to hear about. What kinds of leadership questions do you have? What questions do you have about “missional”? What’s been missing in the blogosphere that you’d love to see here at StretchyChurch?
[By the way, this blog is built on a new platform called Core Canvas, developed by Enthusiast. Full disclosure: my brother is one of the guys who designed Core Canvas. So far I’m loving it!]
